Shifted from a Diesel to an EV in 2026
By: Utkarsh Pandey
I owned a Mahindra Bolero Neo 2021 model since it was launched. Since 2008 I continuously had diesel vehicles. There was hardly any phase when I owned a car running on any fuel other than diesel.
Bolero Neo is generally not considered as a family SUV rather it is robust, rough, tall and powerful vehicle, after being upgraded from TUV 3OO, it had better stability with its tougher suspension. It is not a complete 7 seater yet it's jump seats are very useful since we had to take decision of buying vehicle considering our fifth member, who is a ~8 years old German Shepherd.
We drove it around 65000 kms, it was the only car which lasted for more than 4 and a half years with us and driven passionately around norther plains to plateaus of Jharkhand. It is the best compact SUV in its segment with RWD, that too starting under 10 Lakhs for its N4 model. All those who owns it won't deny the fact of feeling the vibe of SUV-effect in it as well. Its really a lovely beast.
I knew that my dad would soon change the car but I was more prepared of a next Diesel rather than an all new EV segment. We even reviewed Tata Sierra, the same day it reached the dealership. Though it didn't fit with the personality of my dad of owning all tall SUV styled cars. While utilizing Land Rover's design language in Sierra, it actually went away from what the original Sierra was.
In EVs, there is already an MG Windsor Pro owned by my cousin since around October so we had seen it's design. Though we were not very satisfied with its front facia with the reason given of it for being a born-EV utilizing the maximum space.
I researched and found out that MG motors (Morris Garages), a Britain based company was in partnership with SAIC motors of China when it opened it's plant in India but later on in 2020 after Indo-China border disputes, Government of India imposed some restrictions and asked them to include Indian companies as their partners if they wish to continue in the Indian Automobile market. Upon which Jindal Steel (JSW) group joined the venture and since then it is called as JSW MG Motors India Pvt Ltd.
I explored how China is not using their cheap technology rather is actually using the same tactic how Suzuki sells its cars' rebadged version under the name and reliability of Toyota in India.
So, technically Chinese company "Wuling" have a car named "Cloud EV" which is rebadged as MG's Windsor EV in India. Hence there are some pros and cons related with it as well. I will be discussing about them in my future blogs.
You can comment your thoughts or let me know if you too own an EV!
